2/7/2024 0 Comments Unity software stock a buySo in the end Unity is desperate for new areas, new venues, and perhaps that Venue is VR via Apple. And real pros save hours of work time thanks to these. Meanwhile Unrels Engine (main competitior) came out with competitive pricing and tools (blueprints) so simple it's possible for people with no coding skill whatsoever to contribute and build. And hence Unity fell out of favour, their engine is limited and far from flexible. Once toy get past the honeymoon period you'll get headache after headache trying to get even simpler things to work smoothly. It does many things, and none of them close to good. Unity had a great start when they were new, offered a cheap entry point and easy tools making them a favourite amongst indies and amateurs. Heck, they need others to use their tools, not merely Apple saying "oh there's Unity". I started buying a year ago and am long a share average.Ī long writeup but Unity has a lot to prove and Apple mentioning them isn't worth shit if they can't deliver. Unity is the only company in this space that seems worth accumulating at these prices. Idk, I'm on the fence about investing in them. Other companies in this space that get me excited include Nvidia, which I own a bunch of (I lump summed a few years ago), and adobe, but adobe is a little too risky for me since they are already pretty mature as a company, and some of their existing software is falling out of favor. I also see more industries using these kinds of tools in ways that might not be obvious today. In the long term I see unity spreading its wings as a 3d software ecosystem that encompasses a variety of (likely paid) tools, and likely with a heavy lean into AI. Making a game engine has always been hard, but it's getting harder, and the further the technology evolves the bigger the moat is gonna get. I'm sorry anyone who thinks AAA studios and their (decreasingly used) proprietary engines offer any real notable competition in this space. It's about Unity's moat as one of the few full featured, user friendly realtime 3d engines, and by few I mean their only true competition is unreal engine. In my opinion, in the long term, it's about the increasing prevalence of realtime 3d as an important tool for a growing number of industries. It's not only about the consumer-facing side of the business either (games), which is what people tend to think of when they think of Unity. It's a great engine, but it's not even only about the engine itself. But I'm confident in unity and how they're positioning themselves long-term. Of course all of this is nonsense talk if they don't have the tech to back it all up. If a new VR headset being announced can send the stock flying, I'm looking forward to the next couple years when we see actual noteworthy stuff coming from Unity that will have a more tangible impact on their business. But I also can't help but think that the company is also a bit misunderstood. I guess it's out of caution because they had some rough moments in 2022. There's plenty of other stuff to be excited about with unity, and I feel that investors are sleeping on it a bit. Imo it's not that big of a deal, unity is already big in the VR market and the thing with vision pro proooobably won't affect them as a company that much. The +27% intraday move when apple gave them a shout-out during their vision pro presentation just solidified for me that investors don't really understand unity that well. ![]() Most information to help you learn and practice can be found in our wiki.
